Tomorrow marks the beginning of the end for homecoming week here at UF. Ceremoniously, Gator Growl will be Friday night, before the football team takes on Mizzou. Since becoming an annual, student-run event in 1932, Gator Growl always brings great music, delicious food, and enough good vibes to go around. Gator Growl is famous for bringing in world-class entertainers such as The Goo Goo Dolls, Robin Williams, Dennis Miller, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Billy Crystal, Richard Jeni, Paula Poundstone, Bob Hope, Dane Cook, Foster the People and Ludacris. This year, the University of Florida hit the jackpot when they booked Waka Flocka Flame, Passion Pit, Maddie and Tae and Timeflies! Here’s a closer look at each artist.
Waka Flocka Flame is probably most famous for his single, “No Hands”, which peaked at Number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Involved in the hip-hop and rap scene since 2009, Waka Flocka Flame has released two studio albums, “Flockaveli” and “Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family”. Collaborations with rappers ASAP Ferg, Gucci Mane, French Montana and DJ Khaled as well as EDM artists Steve Aoki and Flosstradamus makes Waka Flocka Flame a diverse and unique artist that you can’t miss the opportunity to see live.
Passion Pit will also be performing. The group is an indie alternative band originally from Massachusetts, that formed in 2007. The band is made up of five musicians, including three members who play guitar, keyboards and synthesizers. Passion Pit rose to fame in 2012 when their second studio album, “Gossamer” was released and skyrocketed to Number 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums. When describing Passion Pit and groups similar to them, people in the music community struggle to come up with one exact word to describe all the different musical qualities present in the songs. Some call it electropop, neo-psychedelia and synthpop. The music is quite catchy, and the production of the keyboards, guitar and electric synthesizers is crisp, sharp and makes for great songs. Passion Pit is another act that you can’t pass up the chance to see.
The other two acts that are performing at Gator Growl 2016 aren’t as well known, but still provide an diverse and eclectic sound that makes the annual concert so great. Maddie and Tae are a female country duo, both of whom sing, write their own songs and play guitars. They are prominent figures in the country music scene, especially among younger listeners. Their first album was released in 2015, entitled, “Start Here”, and including well-known singles of "Shut Up and Fish". and "Sierra". Lastly, Timeflies will be performing. This pop band rose to fame very recently with their hit single, “All The Way”, which is currently at 45 million Spotify streams. They have appeared on a variety of TV shows such as, Good Morning America and Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! and American Idol.
Homecoming at the University of Florida is all about coming together and celebrating school pride while being surrounded by great music. I truly believe that UF did an outstanding job picking the talent for this year, and can’t wait to witness the musical prowess of the four musical acts Friday night! See you there and, as always, Go Gators.
